Comprehensive Statewide Needs Assessment
Summary of Pre-Employment Transition Services Survey

Parents and guardians were surveyed on behalf of their transition-age youth. Complete survey responses were gathered for 147 youth who were an average of 18 years of age. Responses were gathered for youth with a variety of disabilities of which 85% were Caucasian and 59% were on behalf of males. 74% of the primary disabilities were reported as Autism, Learning Disability, or Intellectual Disability and 54% of the youth were currently receiving services. When asked about satisfaction with Pre-Employment Transition Services, 65% responded they were satisfied.

When parents and guardians were asked what services were provided to their youth, the majority (69%) chose “helped your child explore career options, including identifying job strengths, weaknesses, and interests”.  When asked to identify the top two or three supports provided, respondents identified:

  • Workplace readiness training
  • Instruction in self-advocacy
  • Work-based learning

When asked how Nebraska VR can improve services, respondents identified the need for the following:

  • Improved communication with parents regarding the scope and expectations of Pre-Employment Transition Services.
  • Introduction to Pre-Employment Transition Services provided early in the school year to parents and students.
  • Awareness of the benefits of applying for adult services from Pre-Employment Transition Services and the general criteria and timing for application.

Parents and guardians were asked, right now, what job or career seems most interesting to your child. They responded with:

  • Plumbing, Welding, Robotics, Information Technology, Graphic Design
  • Food Service, Retail, Customer Service
